Care should be taken to give children worksheets that they are capable of doing. This involves understanding and monitoring the child continually, since the level of attainment of different children would often be quite different. The worksheet should challenge the child but not overwhelm her. If the worksheet is too easy or too repetitive, it may bore the child and she would not be happy. If the activity is too difficult it would frustrate her and she would not like to take up more sheets. The children should love to do the worksheets; they should not be thrust upon them. Also doing only worksheets alone repeatedly would not be very productive. You should have a range of physical games and activities as well that would reinforce the concepts learnt. Here are a few ideas for such activities: ==> The alphabet song: This remains a lovely way to practise the alphabet. Sing it slowly and sing it often. If you have a large alphabet chart and point out to each letter while you sing, it will be of great value. You can give all children letter cards in order (alphabet flashcards); they can hold up each letter as it is sung.
The common element in most educational versions of bingo is the use of modified bingo worksheets. Instead of the standard worksheets that contain numbers, the teacher creates, ahead of class, worksheets that contain items chosen for the lesson. In the math class, the items might still be numbers, but the numbers are the answers to problems called out by the teacher. Really there are almost endless possible variations, and innovative teachers are inventing new ones all the time. Obviously, it would not be a good use of a busy teacher’s time to spent a lot of time manually preparing a worksheet for each student. It is amazing the difference in effort you will get from worksheet to worksheet. Granted the amount of effort may vary immensely from year to year depending on the group of students you have. However for the most part, when a worksheet is needed to help drill down a procedure, standard, or lesson, its effectiveness can and will vary. Therefore it is our job as the teacher to make sure that when we need to utilize a worksheet, we provide the students with one that is as inspiring as can be. Times are different these days. Kids are growing up in a world of microwaves, fast food chains, Nintendo, Wifi, iPads, along with a ton of other technical marvels.
There are of course many other educational variations of bingo, and innovative educators are sure to come up with yet more ideas on this theme. The key requirement of course to using any of these versions of bingo in the classroom is having a set of bingo worksheets with the appropriate items for the particular lesson. In some cases it may be possible to buy such worksheets preprinted, but they can be expensive, and of course preprinted items do not allow the teacher to choose exactly the items they should contain. A cheaper and more flexible approach may therefore be to use a computer and some bingo worksheet maker software – that way the teacher can easily print custom bingo worksheets whenever they are needed.
Head Full of Numbers Game is also created by Learning Resources and the recommended age is 7 and older. This fast-paced math games involves dice and a race against the clock. Players roll the dice and have to create math equations using those numbers. There is a high level of competition involved which provides an exciting encouragement to develop math skills. Counting and Numbers Quizmo by World Class Materials can be used by children ages 3-8. Young players will be introduced to a variety of game experiences to help them associate the numbers one through ten with both their names and their values. To conceptualize the value of these numbers, the game uses concrete and abstract methods which significantly improves the child’s ability to understand the meaning of these numerals. Sum Swamp Math Board Game is produced by Learning Resources and is best played by children ages 5 to 7. Players journey through the swamp by adding and subtracting the numbers rolled on the dice. The Crocodile Short Cut and the Endless Loop add a level of danger and excitement and keep the players’ interest.
Most people are familiar with the game of bingo. The idea of the game is simple: each player is given a bingo worksheet (or ”bingo card” or ”bingo board”) containing a grid of squares (each square usually contains a different number), and the goal is to cross out numbers as they are called out by the bingo caller, hopefully being the first to achieve a winning pattern or line (what is considered a winning pattern may vary depending on the rules being used). One thing that you may not know however is that there are many variations on the basic game of bingo, and these have been applied for a variety of educational purposes. Bingo is in fact an excellent tool that can be used to help teaching reading, vocabulary, math, science and many other K-12 subjects, and also is of use in teaching English as Second Language (”ESL”).
In my 5th grade classroom, we use a math review series that’s engaging and entertaining at the same time. In essence they are simply halfpage handouts with ten standards based math problems woven into a special picture or exciting scene. Remember, I want to keep the math review time quick, but effective. My students are engaged in the activity because they are always eager to find out what the next scene will be, and how the math problems will be nestled within. They also like how within each handout I inscribe the title in a way that fits with the theme of that particular scene – another attention catching technique. And since this review activity only takes about fifteen minutes of class time, it is quick yet extremely beneficial. Point is, whatever it takes to get students actively involved with the reviewing process where they are not bored and effectively reviewing grade level material in order to prepare them for state or quarterly assessments. Hopefully this has inspired you to develop exciting and engaging review worksheets for your class when needed and your students achieve as much as they can when it comes time to test.
