Most people are familiar with the game of bingo. The idea of the game is simple: each player is given a bingo worksheet (or ”bingo card” or ”bingo board”) containing a grid of squares (each square usually contains a different number), and the goal is to cross out numbers as they are called out by the bingo caller, hopefully being the first to achieve a winning pattern or line (what is considered a winning pattern may vary depending on the rules being used). One thing that you may not know however is that there are many variations on the basic game of bingo, and these have been applied for a variety of educational purposes. Bingo is in fact an excellent tool that can be used to help teaching reading, vocabulary, math, science and many other K-12 subjects, and also is of use in teaching English as Second Language (”ESL”).
As adults we read all the time; if not books, then emails, information on the internet, road signs, business letters and documentation. Learning how to read is vital for your child’s success at school, and printable preschool worksheets can be a big help. Can you draw? When your child is first introduced to the letters of the alphabet, those letters are usually related to pictures of items that start with that letter. You will find ’Annie Apple’, ’David Dolphin’ and similar terms used throughout the world to introduce children to sounds and letters. Unless you’re artistic and can draw, printable worksheets may be an easier solution – and generally more affordable than a book.
Kindergarten should be fun. And teaching kindergarten can be fun too. But as any good kindergarten teacher would well understand, it can be an extremely active experience. A kindergarten teacher has to get fully involved and involve children with lots of interesting kindergarten activities, worksheets and exercises, that would hold their attention and make it an enjoyable experience for them. There are two important points that may be kept in mind here: ==> The learning should be fun. It should not feel like work, but play. For otherwise, children will quickly get bored. Hence it would be a good idea to use a lot of interesting activities, games, coloring sheets, illustrated kindergarten worksheets etc. You should be well prepared with these teaching aids, which can be made very easily. The learning should be real-worldly. It is easiest to learn and remember when whatever is learned is immediately applied to a practical, real-life situation. You should use every opportunity to teach and regularly reinforce basic concepts taught, in real-life and in real-time. For instance, during snack-time, if a child is eating a biscuit, you can say – ’B’ for ’biscuit’. While waiting for a school van, you can say – ’V’ for ’Van’ and so on. Whether you are home schooling a child or teaching in a classroom do make the learning a very interactive exercise with lots of educational activities and games. Completing the worksheet activity can give children an immense sense of accomplishment. The common element in most educational versions of bingo is the use of modified bingo worksheets. Instead of the standard worksheets that contain numbers, the teacher creates, ahead of class, worksheets that contain items chosen for the lesson. In the math class, the items might still be numbers, but the numbers are the answers to problems called out by the teacher. In a language class, the worksheets might be printed with Spanish or French words, which the students must match to calls made in English by the teacher. Really there are almost endless possible variations, and innovative teachers are inventing new ones all the time. You might think that this is all very well, but where can the special customized bingo worksheets be obtained. Obviously, it would not be a good use of a busy teacher’s time to spent a lot of time manually preparing a worksheet for each student. Fortunately, there is an answer – a PC and some bingo worksheet creator software can make light work of printing worksheets on any theme that the teacher chooses.
Care should be taken to give children worksheets that they are capable of doing. This involves understanding and monitoring the child continually, since the level of attainment of different children would often be quite different. The worksheet should challenge the child but not overwhelm her. If the worksheet is too easy or too repetitive, it may bore the child and she would not be happy. If the activity is too difficult it would frustrate her and she would not like to take up more sheets. The children should love to do the worksheets; they should not be thrust upon them. Also doing only worksheets alone repeatedly would not be very productive. You should have a range of physical games and activities as well that would reinforce the concepts learnt. Here are a few ideas for such activities: ==> The alphabet song: This remains a lovely way to practise the alphabet. Sing it slowly and sing it often. If you have a large alphabet chart and point out to each letter while you sing, it will be of great value. You can give all children letter cards in order (alphabet flashcards); they can hold up each letter as it is sung.
Some examples of educational variants of bingo include: * Sight Word Bingo – This is used to help teach children reading skills, particularly of sight words (such as words on the Dolch sight word list), which are words that students can not easily sound out but most learn to recognize. The teacher calls out a word, and the students look for the corresponding word printed on their bingo worksheet (or ”bingo card”). * Math Bingo – This version of bingo is played using bingo worksheets printed with numbers. However, these are not the standard numbers used on bingo cards, but instead are the answers to math problems called out by the teacher. The problems can be as hard or as easy as the teacher chooses, and this method can be used for a variety of math topics include additions, subtractions, multiplications, divisions, fractions, decimals, rounding, etc. * Foreign Language Bingo – The bingo worksheets are printed with words in the particular foreign language, say Spanish, and the teacher makes bingo calls in English. Students must translate the bingo calls, and then find the corresponding square on their bingo worksheet.
There are many math-based games available in educational toy stores that will help to reinforce the principles your child learns in worksheets. Computer games can help too, but depending on the age of your child, it is best not to encourage too much computer use at an early age. Everyday activities can be turned into math lessons too. A trip to the grocery store can turn into a math lesson if you encourage your child to help you count how many items you are buying, or add up the bottles of milk as you add them to your cart. Your aim should be to make math fun for your child and help them gain a solid understanding of the basics. Encourage your child to incorporate math into their daily activities, help them do mathematics worksheets, and then use the lessons therein to create fun activities for your child. The secret to learning math is to have an open mind about it. Just because you hated math doesn’t mean your child should, and you will be doing them a disservice if you pass your negative feelings on to them. Make learning math fun, get a comprehensive set of mathematics worksheets to make it exciting and stimulating, and encourage your child’s efforts all the way. Every math genius had to start with 1 + 1, just like your child.
